“500 million small farms worldwide, provide up to 80 percent of food consumed in a large part of the developing world. Investing in smallholder women and men is an important way to increase food security and nutrition for the poorest, as well as food production for local and global markets,” UN Sustainable Development Goals.
In partnership with CARE Denmark, CARE Kenya and local organizations, Chr. Hansen is finding new ways to support smallholder farmers in Kenya.
“There is a need for new and well-performing tools for the farmers to increase the productivity of their land and strengthen food security in these areas. Chr. Hansen has the needed technical expertise and we are ensuring that the smallholder farmers get knowledge and value of technology such as the one from Chr. Hansen,” Morten Fauerby Thomsen. The first step in the partnership has been to identify local partners and agree on the scope. The next step will be to test the natural plant solutions on local crops.
“CARE’s focus area is primarily on those in most need - the smallholder farmers. While the smallholder farmers are likely to benefit most from products like our microbial solutions, they are also the most difficult to reach and with the least exposure and access to new technologies. Without the support from CARE Denmark, Chr. Hansen would not be able to reach smallholder farmers.
