We all need balance, to thrive, progress, and live a life of fullness – with all its joys and struggles. Balance is the vital principle that governs our everyday reasoning, behavior, and decision-making. Chr. Hansen Human Health supports balance where it's needed most: within. Enabling balance forms the very fiber of what we do: nurturing human health and well-being by bringing microbiome-based probiotic solutions to life.

Life is ...

Life is full of surprises. Some are tiny, others more significant. Regardless, dealing with life’s challenges and unpredictable adventures in a positive manner, health and inner balance are our greatest allies. Our most precious wealth.

The gut microbiome – at the different stages of life

Birth

Shaping of gut microbiome starts as the newborn inherits bacteria from the mother, particularly during a natural childbirth3,4 and through breastfeeding4,16.

First months of life

Bifidobacteria tend to dominate the microbiota5. The early microbiome has important functions for the infant’s immune6, 7, metabolic8 and neurological9 development, which affects health and well-being of the child, but also has long-term health effects10.

Adulthood

Each individual has their own, fully established microbiota profile11. The adult microbiome helps to maintain a healthy immune system1,12. It’s relatively stable, but sensitive to lifestyle factors.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, increased progesterone reduces gut bacterial richness, and stimulates bifidobacteria and other certain types of beneficial bacteria13,14. These influence the immune development of the fetus15.

Late adulthood

The gut microbiota of elderly subjects shows reduced bacterial diversity17, shifts in the dominant species18 and a decline in beneficial microorganisms such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria19.
